Poetry Out Loud 2011 Upcoming Events:
Local Contra Costa County Competition
February 13, 2011 Deer Valley High School, Antioch 1PM

Poetry Out Loud is also featured in AC5's ARTBEAT newsletter.

We are pleased to announce the local Contra Costa County Competition for the 2011 Poetry Out Loud program, set to take place on February 13, 2011 at 1PM. The program is hosted by Deer Valley High School in Antioch, CA. One of AC5's newest commissioners, Pandora Bethea, has been instrumental in bringing together the people and resources to insure a successful event. Ms. Bethea has valuable connections with this program, having been the teacher who worked with last year's Contra Costa County POL winner, Cheryl Evans, she has done an amazing job assembling the 2011 program at Deer Valley High School. Please join us in support of the students who have worked so hard to be a part of this competition. Minds will be stimulated and hearts invigorated listening and watching these young poets on the stage. The date to put on your calendar is Sunday, February 13, 2011 at 1 PM. The Poetry Out Loud Program is funded in part by Mechanics Bank.

Participating schools in the Contra Costa area are:

     Deer Valley High, Antioch
     Dougherty Valley, San Ramon
     Independence High, Brentwood
     Las Lomas High, Walnut Creek
     Miramonte High, Orinda
     Monte Vista, Danville
     Mt. Diablo High, Concord
     Richmond High, Richmond
     Salesian High, Richmond
     Salesian High, San Ramon
Delta Academy for the Performing Arts, Antioch

"Young people interested in rap and slam contests can be surprisingly interested in classical poetry when it's presented through the Poetry Out Loud competition," said Muriel Johnson, Director of the California Arts Council. "We've seen students from all backgrounds and academic levels embrace this program wholeheartedly. It can change their lives."

One of the goals of the Poetry Out Loud program is to foster the next generation of literary readers by capitalizing on the latest trends in poetry: recitation and performance. Poetry Out Loud competitions start in the classroom, then at the school, region, state, and national finals, similar to the structure of the spelling bee. The national initiative is part of an attempt to bring literary arts to students, a critical need in U.S. schools, according to a 2004 NEA report Reading at Risk that found a dramatic decline in literary reading, especially among younger readers.
