On Thursday, February 15, 2007, California Lawyers for the Arts, in association with the Arts and Culture Commission of Contra Costa County,
presented the second Symposium on California Arts and Healthy Communities at The Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek.
Speakers
included: Warren Rupf, Sheriff of Contra Costa County; Honorable
Josanna Berkow,
Commissioner and Judge Pro-Tempore, Contra Costa County Superior Court;
Ann
Schnake, Executive and Artistic Director, ArtsChange; Jordan Simmons,
Artistic Director, East Bay Center for the Performing Arts and
Erin Gabel, District Representative for Senator Tom Torlakson.
This symposium will have state-wide distribution via local access TV stations, providing an opportunity to hear knowledgeable
speakers discuss the significance of the arts for youth development,
health care, ethnic relations, crime prevention and the reduction of
recidivism. California spends less on the arts (three cents per person)
than any other state in the country.
The Symposium was designed
to highlight the role of the arts in Contra
Costa County
as well as the gaps which need to be addressed throughout California.
Symposium presenters engaged with the audience in a lively
discussion of how to get involved in restoring state support for the arts in
order to improve the quality of life in our communities. A reception
followed at Strings Pasta Cafe.
Co-sponsors include
