We are pleased to offer the AC5 Art Passages MIXOLOGY gallery's Ekphrastic poetry submissions. MIXOLOGY is the Art Passages gallery currently on display at the County Administration Building in Martinez at 651 Pine Street, Martinez, Contra Costa Country, CA. As part of the gallery showing, Contra Costa County poets as well as poets viewing the gallery online globally, were invited to submit poetry writings inspired by a chosen artwork from the gallery.
What is Ekphrastic Poetry? An Ekphrastic poem is a poem written about another art form. This other form of art is most often a painting or other visual work of art, such as a photograph, collage or sculpture. The words of the poem can explain or analyze what is happening in the visual art, or the poem can derive a meaning from the visual art and go from there. Either way, there is a visual basis to the Ekphrasis that is enhanced by the things that only a mind can see. Etymology: Greek ekphrasis, literally, description, from ekphrazein, to recount, describe, from ex- out + phrazein to point out, explain.
The Art Passages MIXOLOGY gallery opened on April 14, 2010. The gallery opening event was attended by over 75 people including a number of writers and poets who were invited to view the artwork and write a piece about something that moved them during their visit. The writing invitation was extended to poets nationwide through the AC5 online gallery (click here to view).
AC5 received beautiful, moving works of poetry from poets ranging in age from ages 17 to 86. Some works of art received multiple submissions. Rather than choosing one submission per work of art, it was determined that all poems would be published. This is in keeping with the mission of AC5, to act as a convener of the Arts in all its forms, for all members of Contra Costa County. We are delighted that some poets who were not able to visit the gallery in person could view the artwork online and be inspired to write poetry that way.
The gallery includes over 60 works of art. If you have not been to see it, we invite you to come visit before the closing on or about June 5, 2010, after which time a new gallery will be arranged.
The artwork and related poetry titles listed here are displayed in alphabetical order according to the title of the artwork. Click on the VIEW text next to each poem to open a new window for that poem and the related artwork.
