Nomination Deadline Nears
Do you know someone who deserves an
Arts Recognition Award? It's very easy to make a nomination. The nomination
form is available at our website, www.ac5.org,
and asks two questions about your nominee:
1.
What
role has the nominee played in support of the arts and culture in Contra Costa
County and beyond?
2.
Why
should this nominee be recognized in the arts field, and what impact has the
nominee had on the arts in the community?
Deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday,
July 15, 2008.
Arts Scholars Ceremony
Eight students from throughout
Contra Costa County
attended the 2008 Arts Scholars Ceremony on July 8. They are among the 16
county students recognized as "California Arts Scholars" selected by
the state's InnerSpark program. Many of these gifted and talented
students will participate in an intensive pre-professional training program at
the California State Summer School for the Arts, which will be held at the
campus of the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia. The four-week
training program will provide students with a supportive environment where they
will hone acquired skills and explore new techniques and ideas in their chosen
arts discipline.
Created by the California
Legislature, the purpose of InnerSpark is to provide a training ground for
future artists who wish to pursue careers in the arts and entertainment
industries in California.
For more information about InnerSpark, visit their website at www.csssa.org.
Arranged by
AC5, the Arts Scholars Ceremony took place at 9:30 am during the Board of
Supervisors meeting in the County Administration Building
at 651 Pine Street
in Martinez.
In a resolution presented by Contra Costa County District V Supervisor and
Chair Federal D. Glover, sixteen county students were officially declared
"California Arts Scholars" at the ceremony. Contra Costa County
Supervisors John M. Gioia (District I), Gayle B. Uilkema (District II), Mary N.
Piepho (District III), Susan Bonilla (District IV), and AC5 Commissioner and
Vice Chair P.J. Shelton also participated in the Arts Scholars Ceremony with
AC5 Executive Director Robin Moore.
A list of the sixteen Contra Costa
County 2008 California Arts Scholars and select samples of these students' work
are available to view on the AC5 website.

AC5 Seeks Arts Activist
AC5's Alternate
Seat is currently vacant. Candidates for this position should have a strong
interest in supporting the arts and live in Contra Costa
County. Unlike other commissioners who represent a
specific supervisory district, the commissioner appointed to the Alternate Seat
can reside anywhere in the county.
There are
eight commissioners on AC5 - one appointed by each of the five county
supervisors, two At-Large commissioners, and one Alternate. The Alternate can
vote for any absent member or vacant seat.
In some cases, the Alternate can move to a regular commission seat: 1)
if a vacancy occurs in one of the at-large seats, the alternate would
automatically assume that vacant seat. 2)
If a vacancy occurs in the seat representing the district where the alternate
resides, the alternate would assume that vacant seat upon the concurrence of
the Supervisor for that district.
Current
commissioners review applications submitted, interview candidates and make a
recommendation to the County
Board of Supervisors, who
make the formal appointment. The term of
office is 4 years.
Application
forms are available on the Contra
Costa County
web site (www.co.contra-costa.ca.us;
choose Board Advisory Body Information), or by calling the Arts & Culture Commission
office at 925.646.2278.
The AC5 commission
meets monthly in open session. AC5's mission is to support artists and arts
organizations in the County and to forge strong partnerships between the arts
community and the community at large through such programs as its annual awards
recognition event, advocacy activities, and educational programming. Current commissioners
include David Duer, District 1; Darwin Marable, District 2; P.J. Shelton,
District 3, Christine Callahan, District 4, Darija Walker, District 5, and At-Large
commissioners Shelley Barry and Sarah Michael. Learn more about AC5 at http://www.ac5.org/about-ac5/what-we-do.html

AC5's Video Sponsorship Program
AC5 is
pleased to announce the launch of a new Video Sponsorship Program. This program invites film makers,
videographers, artists and arts organizations to submit videos for AC5
sponsorship and broadcast on Contra Costa Television's (CCTV) cable television
station (channel 27 on Comcast or channel 32 on Astound).
Videos
submitted to AC5 will be evaluated for their educational and entertainment
value, alignment with AC5's mission and overall video quality. When recommending videos to CCTV for
broadcast, AC5 will give priority to videos that further AC5's mission to
advance the arts in a way that promotes communication, education, appreciation
and collaboration throughout Contra Costa County so that we may grow creatively
as a community that preserves and celebrates our diverse cultural
expression.
There is no
cost or deadline to submit a video for consideration and sponsorship by AC5,
and videos will be evaluated on an as needed basis. Videos sponsored by AC5
will be aired at the discretion of CCTV.

information, guidelines, and application materials, please go the AC5 website (www.ac5.org ), or contact Anne Atkinson at

CREATE A DIRECTORY ACCOUNT AND BE
COUNTED
AC5 urges
all Contra Costa County
arts organizations to create a free online profile on the AC5 Arts Directory
and Calendar (the "Directory"). Creating
a profile for your non-profit or for-profit arts-related business on the
Directory will help create a clearer profile of the arts community in Contra Costa
County, and will help AC5
to better advocate for the arts on your behalf.
Organizations have the opportunity to create their own webpage on AC5's
Directory, where events can be posted to the community calendar, and up to 16
work samples can be uploaded.
Organizations that already have websites have the option of simply
providing a description and a link to their own webpage on their AC5 Directory
profile.
We know
about only a few hundred arts organizations in the County, and we know this is
an undercount. If you are not on our
Directory, your arts organization will not be represented in our data. Do your part to help advance the arts in Contra Costa
County-CREATE A DIRECTORY ACCOUNT AND BE COUNTED. Creating an account on the Directory takes
less than 10 minutes. It's fast and it's
free. If you're ready to CREATE A DIRECTORY ACCOUNT AND BE
COUNTED, go to the Directory now.
