Accepting Donations In Memory Of Commissioner Roberta Seabury
Friends and associates of the late Roberta Seabury, a
commissioner on the Arts and Culture Commission of Contra Costa County, are
invited to make donations to a memorial fund established by Friends of AC5, the
commission's nonprofit support group.
The fund was set up with approval of Ms. Seabury's family
after her untimely death on October 10 at her home in Diablo. She had been
suffering from cancer.
Once all donations are compiled, Friends of AC5 plans to
provide the money in the form of scholarships to talented underprivileged young
people who are pursing careers in the arts.
A similar fund was organized in 2005 in memory of Karen Ciraulo,
former AC5 managing director.
On October 24, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors
paid tribute to Ms. Seabury, who had served as an AC5 commissioner for seven
years. The tribute was read by
Supervisor Mary Piepho. It was her
district that Ms. Seabury represented.
At a celebration of Ms. Seabury's life on October 20, Judge
Josanna Berkow of the Spinetta Family Law Center in Martinez
extolled her efforts in organizing the "Art in the Courthouse" committee. One of the group's achievements is arranging
exhibitions of art in the county's courthouses.
Bob Rezak, long-time AC5 commissioner and friend of Ms.
Seabury, spoke about her commitment and participation in the arts among her
many other interests and activities. He
described her as "an extraordinary woman."

Statewide Arts Conference Planned for January 30
Dana Gioia, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts
(NEA), will be the keynote speaker at "California Arts: Reflecting - Reframing
- Responding," the first statewide conference on the arts in four years.
Arranged by the California Arts Council, the conference will
be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on January 30 in Sacramento at a location to be announced.
"This conference is about inspiration and information, and
the opportunity to share ideas with each other," said Muriel Johnson, CAC
director.
Gioia will reflect on the national perspective and his goals
for the NEA, she said, adding:
"To further reflect on where we
are, we look forward to hearing from the Irvine Foundation on their report,
‘Critical Issues Facing the Arts in California.'
And to reframe where we want to be, we will reflect on the results of the
William and Flora Hewlett Foundation's ‘Survey of Arts in Education in California.' In all
cases, you will be able to respond to the issues through questions and answers."

Update on AC5's Murals Project
ABOVE:
Teachers (left to right) Shabana Kahn, Isabela Ortiz,
Josephine Tran, Suzanne Lefebvre, Susan
Tuttle, Will Plute, and Edward Patton start work on a murals project at Lincoln
School in Richmond last month. The mural, designed by teachers and students, is
produced as part of the Teachers' Mural Workshop, an initiative of the Arts and
Culture Commission of Contra Costa County. The workshop gives teachers the tools and materials to complete
large scale painting projects in Contra Costa schools. The Lincoln
mural plan calls for using the school's slogan as a foundation for the mural
with other designs added over time. This
allows teachers to pace the progress of the mural and build flexibility into
the final design by allowing student input.

Teachers Will Plute, Shabana Kahn and
Josephine Tran prepare for a lunch break during work on the project.
